In the never ending quest for backlinks to boost a website’s search engine rankings, many website owners are often oblivious to the importance of on-page SEO. In fact, it is probably the most important element of search engine optimization but for some reason, its importance has been lost amidst the noise of so called SEO experts extolling the virtues of building backlinks.
If on-page SEO is done well, very few backlinks are required for a website to rank highly with the search engines. Here are the 10 key rules of on-page SEO.
Rule #1 – Understand that each main page of your website needs to be optimized. It is not a website that is ranked by search engines but each individual page.
Rule #2 – Identify the keywords for each main page of your website. Aim for between three and five keywords and make sure that they are keywords that have relatively high search volumes.
Rule #3 – Make these keywords the meta tag title of your page using the syntax keyword#1 keyword#2 keyword#3 etc.
Rule #4 – Use a meta tag description of the page that is a call to action based on the keywords you are targeting. It is this description that will often decide whether a searcher will click through to your site or not.
Rule #5 – Create a meta tag that includes your keywords for that page but also try to include one or two longtail keywords. These are search phrases that people might use when searching for the product, service or information you are providing.
Rule #6 – Develop content on the page that includes each of your keywords at least once. These keywords must appear in the context of the whole page and must not be used excessively.
Rule #7 – Repeat this process for each main page of your website that you want people to find via search engines.
Rule #8 – Ensure that each main page of your website can be easily found by the search engine spiders via the menus on your site and the internal link structure that you create.
Rule #9 – Create a sitemap of your site in both XML and HTML format.
Rule #10 - Submit details of the XML sitemap to Google via your webmaster account (this is free to set up if you don’t yet have one) and include your HTML sitemap on at least the homepage of your site and preferably at the foot of each page.
And that’s about it. Your site will now be optimized to a greater degree than the vast majority of sites on the internet and the search engines will like your site a lot. This means that the number of backlinks required in order for your site to rank highly in the search engines will be relatively low compared to sites that are poorly optimized.
SEO is always a two part system: on-page and off-page. Both are needed for optimal benefit. I agree that there is a "backlinks is king" crowd that neglects on-page seo. I clean up their work all the time. Neither content nor backlinks are king. They are both co-rulers in the kingdom of search.
ReplyDeleteI still think that the main thing you need is a large number of links pointing in to your site with appropriate anchor text and then you can rank fairly well for many niche markets.

ReplyDeletei understand that on-page seo is necessary such as optimized titles, headers, keyword rich content, properly place keywords, internal linking, etc. as far time commitment, i feel like on-page seo is about 25%, the rest of the time goes into link building.
