Excerpt from Through the Postern Gate

The Boy used to stand beside her, ready to hand Mollie's cup, as punctiliously as if a dozen girls had been sitting in the old garden, waiting to be quickly served by the only man.

The Boy enjoyed being the only man. Also he had quite charming manners. He never allowed the passing of bread and-butter to interfere with the flow of conversation; yet the bread-and-butter was always within reach at the precise moment you wanted it, though the Boy's bright eyes were fixed just then in keenest interest on the person who happened to be speaking, and not a point of the story, or a word of the remark, was missed either by him or by you.

Though not of the power or depth of, say, 'The Rosary' or 'The Following of the Star,' this short Barclay story has all the elements that made her one of the most popular writers of her day. The book literally goes through a seven-day peregrination, to have the heroine (self-effacing, 'past the prime,' but intelligent, sophisticated, and noble- the typical English Barclay heroine) fall for the 'boy' she at first disdains to admit, might actually love her.

Glad to have such titles on Kindle. They enable one to read literature, without having to find used/old copies.

A lovely story from a bygone era... Written over 100 years ago. If you like romance with no sex but with explicit Christian content (similar to Grace Livingston Hill) you will be glad to discover this gem, along with the author's other books.
okay not as good as The Rosary
This Christian Romance novel by Florence Barclay is much shorter than most of her novels. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone. As in all her novels there are surprises!
This story was written over 75 years ago, and the young man is in love with an older woman. By today's standards the woman would be called a "cougar"! Please read the story, it is a beautiful one.
A sweet old fashioned love story with a twist. Mrs Barclay transports the reader into her world. A book to read all in one afternoon, and to return to again and again!
Through the Postern Gate by Florence L. Barclay is a novella about English manners and how in the end, they are a bunch of hogwash. It was a free book, but still, I wouldn't necessarily waste my time on it.
Florence once again enthralls her audience with great, 'clean', British literature.
Although, in my opinion, this wasn't one of her best writings yet it still
was a unique story.
It would be great to have such an admirer that was so driven to win one's love and devotion.
It is also pleasant to have mostly positive thoughts about a man ten years younger than a woman.
Society usually frowns on such.
